  • May Guest Blog: LoKo celebrates its 10th birthday (14/05/21)

We are so excited that our guest bloggers this month are Caroline and Tammy from London Kpop Dance Workshop, LoKo: the duo who started LoKo and are celebrating its 10 year anniversary this year! Caroline and Tammy met in 2011 through Caroline’s sister. Since there weren't many Kpop fans and Kpop events at the time, Caroline's sister thought it would be good to connect Caroline and Tammy. At the same time, Tammy realised that there were others like her who wanted to learn Kpop dances. She knew Caroline had a dance background and there began the first conversations about starting Kpop dance classes in London. We know you’ll enjoy reading all about how LoKo started, its adventure-packed journey over the last 10 years, the much-deserved exposure and recognition it has received nationally and internationally, and its vision for the future. We, at LKS, have so much pride and joy that LoKo is a London-based Kpop dance workshop with so many accolades to its name. It has a wonderful reputation in the Kpop community and we feel they are the heart of the London Kpop dance community. We hope they do indeed keep “kpopping when they’re 80”! We will now let Caroline and Tammy from LoKo take the stage! LKS Team LOKO BEGINS AND RIDES THE HALLYU WAVE We were originally going to hold dance classes during the school holidays as we knew the demographic of fans was quite young. However, after our first class, we realised that we needed to hold them more often and ended up doing them every month. We decided that these would be day workshops where we would teach four pieces of K-pop choreography. We posted messages on every K-pop UK group we could find on Facebook asking if anyone could be dance instructors and that’s when our team grew from two to four. Not long after our first class, Korean network SBS got in touch with us to feature on their show, Morning Wide. The Hallyu Wave was finally here and they were trying to cover all K-pop exposure in the UK. Our first major event was in October 2011, just one month after we’d launched ourselves as LoKo. We were approached by someone who was hosting a masterclass with the now prestigious Mihawk Back, who was then a backup dancer and choreographer for SM artists. We’re so grateful that Mihawk agreed to come to London to host a workshop masterclass with us attended by over 30 people, which was mind-blowing. The masterclass was featured on the Korean news channel YTN, who also interviewed us. Mihawk's class had been a roaring success, our exposure exploded and soon our monthly workshops became a well-oiled machine. Our Facebook page also began to grow and word spread about our workshops among the small online K-pop community. Our aim at the time had not been to be a K-pop cover group, but since there were more and more people and events appearing in the community, we knew our team would have to grow. In the summer of 2012, we were asked to perform at the All Age KPop Party which was LoKo's performance debut. We hand-picked some of our students to join the team, all of whom had different strengths and skills, and we rehearsed for around 27 hours over a few weeks to make sure we got it right! There were very few K-pop cover dancers/groups at the time and as we were starting to build a name for ourselves, the pressure was on to be good. We did a mixture of crowd-pleasing songs, including f(x) "Electric Shock", SHINee "Sherlock", BAP "Warrior", EXO "History" and Super Junior's "Sexy, Free and Single". Dancing in front of a crowd that was whooping, cheering, singing along, and doing fan chants gave us a small glimpse into what it's like for a K-pop Idol when they're on stage - it's an amazing feeling knowing that people are enjoying your performance. LOKO’S OWN GANGNAM STYLE Of course, we can't talk about 2012 and not mention Psy's Gangnam Style - the song that put K-pop on the global map. Suddenly, every K-pop fan's aunts and uncles were doing the famous horse dance at parties and weddings. We were approached by a YouTube channel called Video Jug who asked us to film a Gangnam Style dance tutorial. (This video, to date, has been seen an incredible 17 million times!) The Gangnam song was inescapable, and with it came more attention to LoKo. Channel 4's Sunday Brunch invited us to come on their show to teach the presenters and guests how to do the dance. We arrived at the studios and sat in the green room with Ross Kemp and the cooking duo Hairy Bikers! The next TV appearance came with the BBC. They were recording a programme called This Week, which is a satirical and political show with sketches. At the time, Downton Abbey was incredibly popular, so we were dressed as maids and filmed dancing to Gangnam Style around the manor. It was all quite random, but a very fun experience. Nowadays we like to keep Gangnam Style where it belongs....in 2012, haha!! But we of course are grateful for the opportunities that it brought us. COMPETITIONS & SHOWCASES – LOKO HAD ARRIVED Team LoKo (Tammy, Caroline, Isabelle, Deanna) entered our first global dance cover competition - the 'Be My Baby Cover Dance Contest' by Wonder Girls. We had very little money for studio hire so we rehearsed where we could. When it came to filming, we decided to do it on a rooftop in Luton, in the dead of night, in November, the weather was freezing, and we were in mini dresses! We were very excited about filming our first "formal" dance cover and although we didn't win, we got over 20k views on YouTube, and it's still one of our most popular videos to date. The year 2013 was a major year for LoKo, not just because we started organising our first showcase (Hallyu Stage) and our first overseas performance (Paris Manga convention), but also because we decided to enter another global competition - KPop Cover Dance Festival. K-pop was gaining more popularity worldwide and we figured our chances were slim, but at the same time, what did we have to lose? So we entered at the last minute and decided to do "Rock Your Body" by VIXX as it was a really fun choreography. We rehearsed for just 5 hours, recorded on a different day, uploaded our entry, and hoped for the best. Amazingly, we got through to the regional round so we turned up at the KCCUK alongside other contestants and their supporters. When they called out, "Number 8, Team LoKo", we proceeded towards the audition room and noticed that the large crowd behind us was following us. At first, we thought they were competing teams but began to realise that the people in the crowd were there to watch us. The crowd was so big there were no more seats left and many had to stand! Even one of the judges jokingly asked how much we paid them to come and watch us! We were amazed and overwhelmed by the support we received, and as the crowd clapped and cheered during our performance, it really helped us melt all those emotions away and just enjoy dancing. We had so much fun performing in front of everyone but the wait for the winner announcement was nerve-wracking. As the day drew to a close, we were all called in and then they made the announcement: TEAM LOKO!!!" The crowd erupted into applause, we all started crying, inhuman noises were made, and our legs shook as we walked down the steps to claim our prize - an all-expenses-paid trip to Korea to compete in the KPop Cover Dance Finals! Our Hallyu Stage plans were temporarily on hold as we flew out to Korea for the Finals. We met 12 other groups from Japan, Thailand, Canada, USA and Russia, to name a few. We took a 5-hour coach ride to Gyeongju where the finals took place. The stage was set up like a music show (as it was being aired on Arirang) and the effort the other groups put in was immense; you could tell everyone was having loads of fun but people took the competition very seriously too! We were all going to be judged by KPop Idol group Boys Republic and we were up first. At the time, our performance felt very much like a blur but we managed to get through it as we did our rendition of "Hyde" by VIXX - a very different concept to our regional entry. The standard was exceptionally high and although we didn't make it to the Top 3 teams (who then performed at Dream Concert), we were elated at being given such an incredible, unique opportunity, plus the chance to represent the UK. After heading back home, there was no rest for the wicked as we were straight back to work with Hallyu rehearsals and getting the final parts put in place to later produce Hallyu Stage 2 (2015) and Hallyu Stage 3 (2017). Rehearsing for the Hallyu Stage and KPop Cover Dance had been tough. Some of us had full- or part-time jobs, or were students, and we were still doing monthly workshops, so there was so much going on in our lives. We weren't just rehearsing for Hallyu Stage but also leading it; learning choreography and teaching it to Hallyu participants, writing down formations, booking studio time and organising rehearsal dates, researching venues as well as rehearsing for our own numbers, finding volunteers to help us on the day... looking back we have absolutely no idea how we managed to fit it all in, but of course, we made it work. After the Hallyu Stage and KPop Cover Dance competition, our opportunities just snowballed... THE NEXT STAGE Tammy later became the Dance Coach for the KPop Cover Dance Finals and returned to Korea for two more seasons to coach the finalists and teach flash mob performances that the contestants did around Seoul and Gyeongju. This opportunity came up as she vacationed in South Korea in June 2014, and the KPop Cover Dance PD was looking for a dance instructor to coach a special stage performance for foreigners in the 2014 Dream Concert in Seoul. Tammy, along with Deanna and Nikki, coached and danced with 42 foreigners, living in Korea at the time, on stage in the Seoul Olympic Stadium in front of 40,000 people. It was these kinds of opportunities that put us in contact with competitions that we became judges for. We were three-time judges for a Kpop Swedish competition (with the opportunity to perform also), the regional final for KBS Cover Festival hosted by the KCCUK, competitions held in Kingston and New Malden, and also the UK Inter-Uni Kpop Competitions. By 2015, Mihawk Back had returned for a third time and he had gone from backup dancer/resident choreographer to becoming EXO's performance director, who also brought along another choreographer, Kasper. We hosted masterclasses for Bongyoung Park, one of the original dance instructors at the 1 Million Dance Studio. We collaborated with Swedish organisation Kpop NonStop to host a masterclass for BTS' Mr Son, and also with Korean organisation KDA to hold masterclasses for Bae Yoonjung, Park Junhee, Park Hyoje and Prepix's Haw. The most recent collaboration was with Bonjour Coree and KDA to help them host the London leg of the Kwon Twins (from YG X) workshops. Amidst all this, workshops carried on and LoKo has collaborated with UK-based Korea organisation KBCE to produce UK Kpop National Competition and UK Kpop Camp. The year 2017 brought us one of our most favourite K-pop performances of all time; performing at the Feel Korea concert with Kpop idols Snuper. Although as a team we had performed on other stages overseas, this one meant a lot to us as we got to perform on home turf, representing our community. The crowd was incredible and seeing our name in lights was surreal. Snuper was lovely to work with. ALL CHANGE IN 2020 Unfortunately, when the coronavirus hit in 2020, our workshops came to a grinding halt. Although it was upsetting to have to pause our workshops, it did give the team a much-needed rest and gave us time to reflect on how much we had achieved, and just how busy we had been for nearly a decade. A lot can change in 10 years, including people's priorities and direction in life, and our team is no exception; we are extremely understanding of our team's needs and 100% supportive of all our past, present, active and non-active amazingly talented LoKo members. Life happens, but we still share an unforgettable bond. This gap in activity this past year has given us time to concentrate on our wellbeing and personal lives in general as burnout was imminent, if not already surpassed. However, we do miss teaching and seeing our regulars as well as meeting new faces, and we can't wait to be back in the studio with everyone and celebrate our 10th anniversary properly! Now that things seem to be getting better (fingers crossed), we are going to pick up where we left off and start our workshops again soon. Then maybe later we can think about Hallyu Stage 4..... keep your eyes peeled! Just like our team, we have watched the community grow and we feel extremely fortunate to have had such longevity in the community, and we feel like as long as the community is here, and people still love K-pop, then we can stay too. The last 10 years is 10 years longer than we ever imagined, so who knows... maybe we'll still be k-popping when we're 80 :) For future updates on events, you can follow us on our social media: London KPop Dance Workshop @londonkpopdance Londonkpopdanceworks (fun fact about our YT name: the word "workshop" didn't fit, but we didn't realise until we hit the submit button!) Hope to see you all soon, Tammy and Caroline Team LoKo

  • April Blog: Our first K-Pop Charity Concert Online - "For the Love of K-Pop" held on 21/03/21

We are writing this blog following the hosting of our very first K-Pop Charity Concert Online (lovingly called 'KCCO') on Sunday 21st March 2021. You will read below how we went from its inception to the final showcase within weeks. We surpassed all expectations and are so thrilled with its success. We gave the concert the tagline of, "For The Love of K-Pop" as we wanted to feature performances from artists who showed their love for K-Pop through dance and song, and we wanted the worldwide K-Pop community to enjoy their masterpieces! We would like to thank everyone who participate - we wouldn't have been able to do any of this without their fabulous performances. A special thanks to Zozoann for co-hosting the event and expertly handling the technical hiccups! Of course, we cannot forget the wonderful donors who allowed us to exceed our fundraising targets even before the concert had started! So read on to find out about our journey to KCCO and whether we had any mishaps happen on the day! ;-) Keep Calm and Carry On For The Love of K-Pop LKS Team THE WHY & THE WHAT There is one fundamental aim that lies at the heart of London Kpop Street, and that is to give back to our community, be it through providing an ethical shopping experience, showcasing the talents of K-Pop artists, or through charitable donations. We wanted to hold an event to raise funds for UK charitable organisations that support the two most relied-upon services in recent times - healthcare and food banks. Therefore it was a no-brainer that we would create an event where we could raise funds for NHS Charities Together (NHSCT) and The Trussell Trust. We contacted both charities who readily provided us with resources and promoted our event themselves. Even though it is a well-established charity, NHSCT was thankful for what they said was an original way of fundraising with the special K-Pop community. The Trussell Trust was very grateful to us for raising awareness of the work they do, and were so encouraging prior to our first concert, and pleased when we had exceeded our set targets. NHS Charities Together NHSCT is a nationally vital organisation which supports NHS staff, volunteers and patients by providing a forum for nationwide fundraising and campaigns to support the NHS. The Trussell Trust The Trussell Trust is hugely depended upon by people who have faced hardship in the pandemic. It strives to ensure that nobody goes hungry in the UK by providing emergency food to those locked in poverty and their vision is for the UK to no longer have a need for food banks. So what could we possibly do to raise funds for these wonderful charities? We decided to host a K-Pop charity concert online. We wanted to bring some K-Pop cheer during the many recent lockdowns showcase and also thank donors by giving them a unique online concert experience. We set up a JustGiving fundraising page for both charities, with targets of £150 each, at the time being nervous about whether we'd be able to meet our fundraising goals to help these charities. This was our first time organising and hosting an online concert, so we were learning as we went! THE WHO & THE HOW Once we had the idea in place, we knew who we wanted to be our performers for the day. With so many talented K-Pop university societies, and talented K-Pop fan artists in the UK, we immediately reached out to them and it was so wonderful to get immediate positive responses of support from them. It was inspiring to have a number of UK societies represented from all parts of the UK! Below are all the amazing artists and performers who sent us their videos of K-Pop dance and vocal covers: Planning for the event had its own challenges, but we kept our motivation by remembering the essential work done by these wonderful charities and were able to spread the word through our social media accounts and by word-of-mouth. Our LKS friends, members, and well-wishers really came through with their super support! With only 3 weeks of promotion, we exceeded all expectations! THE WHERE & THE WHEN The concert took place on the early evening of Sunday 21 March 2021 via YouTube live stream as the unofficial launch of our YouTube channel! We had lots of people donating up until the last minute to the concert start and we furiously sent out personalised VIP e-tickets to those who donated for a keepsake of the event. We exceeded the expected number of viewers on the day and were so humbled by everyone's positive comments, a few of which are shown below: We enjoyed such a diverse range of dance and song covers from K-Pop bands and soloists! KLASS - Movie Star by CIX UCL - boyband & girlband medleys Swansea - What Can I Do by DAY6 KChoreo - Undercover by ACE & Bomb by AleXa QMUL and KCL - Helicopter by CLC KCL - Here I Am by Baek Yerin & I Can't Stop Me by TWICE OKay - Medley KDS - 'Checkmate' Konstellate & eKlipse - Lovesick Girls by Black Pink LOKO - BTS Medley with Snuper Leonie - original arrangement medley Zozo - On The Ground by Rose This was our first online event, so whilst we tried to foresee and pre-empt any technical issues, we did at one point leave our mics on enabling the audience to hear us 'backstage' praising the acts! It reminded us of when BTS did something similar which made us giggle..... For those of you who heard us, we do apologise for the unplanned bonus entertainment! We ended the show by treating the audience to snippets of Blood, Sweat & Tears by BTS, performed by The K-Tigers - Taekwondo dance group! Check out their videos on their YouTube channel, K-Tigers TV! We will soon have a highlights video coming on our YouTube channel so that you can enjoy a summary of the show again smoothly. In the meantime we have a credits video to thank all our performers - please do check it out. FINAL AMOUNT RAISED We smashed our fundraising combined target of £300 and raised a total of £475.70 for both NHS Charities Together and The Trussell Trust! We are so grateful to all the donors who helped us raise this wonderful amount and those who came to the concert. Without the enthusiasm of our performers, the kindness of our donors, and the support of our event-goers, none of this would have been possible - this inaugural KCCO will always have a soft spot in our hearts! VISION FOR THE FUTURE We are immensely proud of the UK K-Pop talent out there, the supportive K-Pop community, and are thankful for being able to host this concert for them! We enjoyed every moment! This event is only the first of many to come in the future, both online and offline, so watch this space! Once we are able to, we eagerly look forward to meeting you all face to face at a future event one day. In the meantime, we already have ideas of how to make the online event bigger and better, and have several ideas in the pipeline for a possible K-Pop symposium in London! WANT TO COLLABORATE? If you would like to collaborate with us so you can showcase your art by being a guest blogger, helping us with giveaways, taking part in a future community event, or anything else, please do get in touch by email (info@londonkpopstreet.co.uk) We would be thrilled to be able to work with you in the future! • March Guest Blog: Eco-friendly creator of Decorative Hoops (01/03/21)

We are thrilled to introduce our guest blogger for this month – Liz from Sew What! You will read about how her love for textiles and her being a dab hand at crafting novel artistic creations led to the setup of her shop ‘Sew What’. She started out by collecting pins and is now thriving with making beautiful and original decorative hoops. Whatever Liz makes, at the heart of it all lies sustainability and being friendly to the environment, which makes her shop highly original and unique in both its content and backstory! Read all about her journey to setting up her delightful shop and scroll down for pictures of her hoops, including innovative suggestions on how to use them as novel displays to decorate your home or even show off your cherished BTS pins and photo cards! {Because of her special ability to create stunning home decor objects whilst being environmentally aware, we couldn’t wait to collaborate with Liz for this month’s giveaway! **THIS GIVEAWAY HAS NOW ENDED** Please do carry on scrolling down - Liz's blog makes a wonderful read! The theme of it is 'Cherish ARMY' where we celebrate ARMY and that ARMY life! Read on to find out what you could win and the rules to enter!} Good luck and thank you for entering! We Purple You! LKS Team 'SEW WHAT' - by Liz Hi everyone! Welcome to my Sew What blog! I figure I should start with a little bit about me! I’m Liz, and I started ‘Sew What’ (you have to love a punny name!) back in June 2020 after being encouraged by my bestie, Bernice, from @sopeworldpins I started collecting pins in early 2019 as a fun way of showing my love for the BTS boys! I found that I was quickly running out of ways to display my pin collection so pin hoops seemed like the perfect new venture to embark on. I studied Textiles at university, and then at art school, I loved sculpture and making things so a ‘hands-on’ designing degree really spoke to me! INTRODUCTION I started making hoops in the midst of our first UK National lockdown due to the pandemic and I was completely in the dark as to where to start. I was desperate to get into a shop to see and feel fabric rather than looking at an image on a screen! Luckily for me, my Textiles degree meant I knew what to go for. I started by working with some beautifully crushed velvets, which, still to this day, are some of my most popular sells! My degree allowed me to develop an interest in design and sustainability, and I decided to use my online shop as a way to make creative and artistic objects from waste fabric! To date, almost all of my hoops are made with this ‘deadstock’ fabric, i.e. fabric from designers and manufacturers that would otherwise end up in a landfill. I thought that creating hoops would be a perfect way to use these discarded and unwanted fabrics and give them a new lease of life! Admittedly though, I sometimes use fabric that isn’t deadstock, but still too beautiful to resist using! Because I try to not produce much wastage myself when creating my hoops, I only buy half or one metre lengths of fabric at a time, and since deadstock is usually found at the ends of rolls, the remaining fabric is very limited, and therefore the number of hoops I can make with any fabric also ends up being limited! SEW WHAT SHOP HOOPS My shop is currently on Etsy, but I hope to one day have my own online store. I make 8”, 6” and 4” hoops as standard and occasionally I have huge 12” hoops on offer too, which I call ‘boards’! For a while, I even made pinboards out of upcycled photo frames. I think I’d like to bring these back to my shop eventually or venture into other ways of displaying pins and photo cards! When coming up with my hoops I usually start by scouring the internet for fabric, then decide on a hoop colour that will work perfectly, paint and cut and glue, and hey presto, a pin hoop is born! My specific K-Pop hoops are my Mic series hoops based on the BTS mic colours! I try to keep my hoops open to a wide range of collectors with a universal appeal. My most popular hoops have been my first ever Sew What creation ‘Serpentine Silver’ which I’ve restocked several times, followed closely behind by the ‘Moonchild’ hoops which are a personal favourite! I wanted to make my hoops a bit different and while doing my research, I discovered that no one else was painting the outer hoop and I felt that if I were to do this, I’d be offering something a bit different to set myself apart from other makers! DISPLAYING YOUR HOOPS I’ve had a few people ask me how they can display their hoops and you’d be surprised at the many ways there are to do this! I usually attach some pretty strings to mine and hang them from a coat hook on the back of my door. I also have them leaning against books on my shelf. You can buy mini easels for them or hang them from a tiny nail in the wall (please ask permission if you aren’t the homeowner!!!!). VISION FOR THE FUTURE Since starting my shop last year, I’ve discovered a renewed passion for all things artsy. I’ve started drawing and making things again. I’ve bought a bunch of paints, clays and canvases. And the added bonus of all this has been how great it’s been to make friends with other makers on Instagram. I recently started including embroidery on my hoops and am currently trying to find fun ways of using my scraps from finished hoops! I just made a bunch of tiny 3” hoops using the largest scraps and they turned out so cute! I hope in the future to expand further from just creating hoops into making other types of pin displays and creations using waste fabrics! Watch this space! Additionally, my degree was specifically in knitted textiles for the home, so, looking ahead, I would really love to make cushions or things of that nature again. But first I’d have to find the right yarn and make them as eco-friendly as possible! MY ARMY LIFE! I first heard of BTS around five years ago because a really good friend of mine was into them and so they were on my radar, but I wasn’t really paying attention (silly me!). The first song I heard on the radio by BTS was ‘Fake Love’ while I was driving home and I thought to myself, ‘holy ****, I’ve been missing out on this?!’, and there started the slippery slope through the BTS rabbit hole. My first step was to learn their names and we all know where this eventually leads to! I’m an avid collector of Tae and Jungkook pins and photo cards, but I’m OT7 to the core…..RIP my bank account! Because of my love for BTS and ARMY I made a cute little embroidered hoop set for this giveaway with LKS! Hope you enjoy using it for your displays as much as I enjoyed making them!
